The Art and Ritual of the Temizuya 💧⛩️

When you enter a Shinto shrine, one of the first things you’ll notice is a small pavilion with water flowing from bamboo spouts into a stone basin. This is the temizuya (手水舎) — the purification spot — and it’s where visitors prepare themselves before approaching the sacred area.

What is a Temizuya?

The temizuya is all about ritual cleansing. Here, worshippers wash their hands and rinse their mouths to refresh both body and mind, leaving the everyday behind so they can fully engage with the shrine.

A Bit of History
These purification basins have existed for centuries. Originally simple stone basins, they eventually became covered pavilions with bamboo ladles, reflecting Shinto’s focus on purity (kiyome, 清め).

  1. Pick up the ladle with your right hand and wash your left hand.
  2. Switch hands and wash your right.
  3. Pour water into your left hand to rinse your mouth (don’t touch the ladle with your lips).
  4. Spit the water beside the basin, not back in.
  5. Rinse the ladle handle before putting it back.

It’s a gentle, meditative routine — if you take it slowly, it almost feels like a mini ceremony before the main visit.

Extra Details You Might Notice

  • Some basins use natural spring water, symbolizing purity.
  • Many have beautiful carvings in wood or stone.
  • Some shrines include explanations for visitors to help bridge culture and practice.

Tips from Step Into Japan

  • Approach calmly and avoid splashing.
  • Observe others to get a feel for the rhythm.
  • Pause for a moment afterward to take in the surroundings — the sunlight through the trees, the incense scent, the quiet murmurs.

Using the temizuya is more than just washing your hands — it’s a moment to reset, step into the sacred, and start your shrine visit with mindfulness.
